Dreaming of the French Riviera, but a little intimated by the land of butter as a plant eater? Fear not, you won’t go hungry in the seaside city that is Nice. Snacks are abundant and meals plentiful – after all, the coastal lifestyle in this part of the world is heavy on the eating and relaxing side of things. Without further ado, take a look at our guide to the best vegan food in Nice, France.

1. Amour Patisserie Vegetale

There’s no missing out on the quintessential experience of selecting a simply divine range of desserts from a French patisserie whilst in Nice. Amour is a vegan establishment through and through, and offers a number of carefully crafted cakes, breakfast and lunch savories, as well as a lush list of drinks – hot chocolate incoming. Amour Patisserie also goes the extra mile and uses only organic ingredients and is entirely gluten-free.

2. Chez Theresa

Chez Theresa is said to be one of the oldest establishments in Nice that has continuously been serving up socca, the city’s local street food. With beginnings in 1925, Chez Theresa has been baking the famed flatbread/pancake to perfection. Made up of chickpea flour, water, and olive oil, with a generous dusting of white pepper, Chez Theresa’s socca makes for a cheap, healthful, and delicious snack on the go. And although the savoury treat may sound simple, the taste is surprisingly moreish.

3. Fournil Zielinska

Nestled within the winding streets of Old Town Nice, Fournil Zielinska is a full on bakehouse with organic and gourmet sourdough breads coming out the wazoo. You won’t find stacks of baguettes or croissants, but instead you’ll find pillowy focaccias topped with olives, sun-dried tomatoes, local herbs, and sea salt, along with homemade ratatouille on toast, and seasonal soups. Fournil Zielinska’s focaccia truly is the most mouth-watering focaccia we have ever taken a chomp out of.

4. Le Banthai

Although unassuming on arrival, Le Banthai has got the goods when it comes to Thai cuisine. The small eatery spills onto the busy pedestrian street making for a great spot for people-watching. We ordered the spring rolls which were genuinely the best we’ve ever tasted. They’re super fat and full of fresh herbs, and wrapped with a thin layer of pastry that is crisped to perfection. The som tum (green papaya salad) also burst with summery citrus notes and filled us up without a complaint in sight. Le Banthai is quite touristy, but if you’re up for braving the crowds, you’re in for a treat.

5. Byblo’s

On a dining strip that is chokers with French and Italian restaurants, Byblo’s Lebanese is a welcome change of scene for the digestive system. With plentiful and labeled vegan options, the menu is a breath of fresh air from the confusion that is being a vegan in Nice. Dine al fresco and watch the world go by over a mezze of hummus, baba ghanoush, falafel, tabbouleh, pickled veg, and roast potatoes. Or perhaps opt for some dolma (stuffed grapevine leaves), shorbet adas (crushed lentil soup), and fattoush salad. Byblo’s can do no wrong so it seems.

6. Utopia Vegan & Italian Restaurant

They really weren’t joking when they named this place Utopia – it’s a mecca of 100 per cent vegan and Italian goodness. You can get your hands on everything from beet carpaccio and homemade b’rrata to creamy carbonara pasta and Beyond Meat pizzas. If you’re in the mood for some authentic Italian cuisine that doesn’t skimp on flavourtown, then Utopia is the place to be.

Where: 6 Rue Delille

7. La Dame au Cerf

Located off of the beaten track, La Dame au Cerf is a quiet, sunlit cafe that offers an entirely vegan and organic menu. Cheesy toasties and plant-based omelettes are amongst the offerings during breakfast and lunch, along with a rotating selection of homemade cakes. If you’re after something a little heftier, La Dame au Cerf is also open for early dinner, or first dinner, if you will, with specials such as their French-Japanese ramen, and savoury fondue. But we reckon a nice cuppa tea and a good dose of aircon doesn’t go astray at La Dame au Cerf.

Where: 2 Rue de Lépante

8. Caju

With just two outdoor seats, Caju is more of a ‘let’s get some food and eat it on the beach’ kind of stop. The hole-in-the-wall style cafe provides the people of Nice and beyond with 100 per cent plant-based and wholefood eats. Get your hands on a juicy burger, sink your teeth into a guilt-free dessert, or sip on a thick smoothie – we went for one with peanut butter, banana, cinnamon, dates, and maca – it really hit the spot.

Where: 1 Rue Jules Gilly

9. Koko Green

One word – book in advance. Koko Green is one of Nice’s top rated vegan restaurants, and it shows. The casual dining room is super welcoming, and the intimate space is bound to have you eyeing-off your neighbouring table’s dishes. Koko Green’s menu changes with the season, but you can expect a range of international cuisines – from Malaysian nasi lemak and kimchi slaw waffles to chick*n shawarma and banoffee pie.

10. Not Dog

With a beer in one hand and a Not Dog hotdog in the other, you’ll be set for the summertime in Nice. Not Dog is a completely vegan establishment and they’re big on the laid-back vibes. With mostly house-made ingredients, Not Dog slings grubby street eats when you’re in the mood for something naughty. Think: bacony mac ‘n’ cheese, seitan sandos, German currywurst, and of course the juiciest, loaded hotdogs you ever did see. They now live in our dreams.
