All hail the Reuben sandwich – an American-born creation of the early-1900s, traditionally consisting of corned be*f, sauerkraut, Swiss che*se, and Russian dressing, often associated with kosher delicatessens. These days, the tangy, probiotic sandwich is desired globally – including at FacePlant Foods in Edinburugh, Scotland where we had an outrageously tasty number – and in South Australia alike.

Whether you’re into succulent vegan me*ts or a veggie alternative, there’s a vegan Reuben in Adelaide fit for your taste buds. But if not, check out our guides to the best Italian sandwiches in Adelaide, and the best vegan banh mi in Adelaide if you’re into Vietnamese flavours.

1. BRKLYN, Adelaide

Perched above the Rundle Street crowds sits BRKLYN, a New York-inspired gin and cocktail bar complete with a wee kitchen that’s doing the most. As highlighted in our guide to the best vegan fried chick*n in Adelaide, BRKLYN dish out almighty house-made me*ts that are most certainly utilised in their Reuben sandwich. Wedged between two big ol’ slices of toasted rye lies: Swiss che*se, sauerkraut, secret sauce, and of course, the peppery pastr*mi – complemented by a side of potato crisps, and dill pickles. It’s both hefty and heavenly.

Another one here for the veggie-lovers thanks to The Flying Fig in North Adelaide – paying homage to the Jewish delicatessens of New York City. With five Reuben sandwiches across their menu, it’d be rude not to flaunt one for the vegan community of Adelaide. The Flying Fig’s rendition sees: capsicum, zucchini, tomato, house-made sauerkraut of cabbage with kohlrabi and caraway, spinach, and mushroom on grilled dark rye.
