Yes, we know that no restaurant or cafe can truly live up to the greatness that was Taiwanese eatery, Thea Tea Shop that recently shut-shop after 23 years of service – but we’re here to lighten the blow. As painful as the news may be, we must press on, and there are six eateries in Adelaide that we think may help you on your journey to recovery from this immense loss – check them out.
1. Pure Vegetarian, Chinatown
Much like Thea Tea Shop, Pure Vegetarian is an Adelaide institution – they’ve been serving up humongous plates of vegan food in the Market Plaza Food Court, just off of the Adelaide Central Market for literal yonks. At the buffet-style eatery, you’ll find sweet and sour pork, mutton curry, spicy stir-fried eggplant, crispy fish, and Chinese braised cabbage, to name a few regulars on Pure Vegetarian’s rotating menu.
Where: Shop 8, 14 Moonta St, Market Plaza Food Court, Adelaide
2. Katsumoto, Adelaide
Tucked away within Rundle Mall’s Gay’s Arcade sits Katsumoto, an intimate Japanese eatery. The modern fit-out is complete with hanging lanterns and sake-adorned walls, and you won’t be able to leave without thinking of your next trip to Japan. Try the hiyashi chuka (cold ramen) to quench that hunger, or perhaps the nasu dengaku (miso grilled eggplant) with rice and pickles for a satisfying culinary adventure.
Where: Gays Arcade, shop 8G, Adelaide
3. Meet Delight, Adelaide
If you’re in a bit of a noodle mood, Meet Delight may just be the spot to please your cravings. Although there’s just a couple of vegan options on the menu, you can dive straight into Meet Delight’s Yibin dry noodles, topped with preserved mustard, toasted peanuts, and spring onion. They’re chewy, they’re a lil’ tangy, and they might just do the trick.
Where: 29 Field St, Adelaide
4. Laksa House, Chinatown
Thea Tea Shop’s laksa really was something else, and there’s a strong contender in the Market Plaza Food Court that’s about to get an influx of vegans that are hungry for the spicy soup. Laksa House utilise fried tofu puffs as the main source of protein in their laksa, which may sound boring to some, but the little sponges soak up all those gosh darn delicious soupy flavours. Fresh cucumber makes for a cooling sensation to balance out the heat and textural experience.

5. Simply Sarj, Adelaide
That’s right, Adelaide Central Market crowd-favourite, Simply Sarj is back in action, but this time inside The Joinery on Franklin Street. Serving up predominantly Indonesian and Malaysian plant-based cuisine, Simply Sarj never fails to leave a lasting impression on your taste buds. The mee goreng (stir-fried noodles) is pretty well to die for, and the kuih keria (sweet potato doughnuts) are hot property.
Where: 111 Franklin St, Adelaide
6. Pondok Daun, Adelaide
Pondok Daun serves up Indonesian food worth fighting (over the last bite) for. Pondok’s vegan menu spans three pages, with authenticity at the forefront. The gado-gado (cooked salad with peanut sauce) and bihun goreng (fried noodles) are most definitely worth a taste.
Where: 94 Currie St, Adelaide
7. K-pub, Adelaide
K-pub is a hotspot for a reason, and we’re narrowing it down due to their juicy, Korean fried chick*n which is said to be the best in Adelaide. The neon-lit eatery pumps out the K-pop and certainly doesn’t hold back on flavourtown either. Sink your teeth into the stir-fried be*f bulgogi, slurp the mandoo jeongol (dumpling hotpot), or monch some kimchi fried rice.
