Whether you like it or not, it’s Fever February and Mad March season in Adelaide. The city’s East End is well and truly abuzz with big thanks to Adelaide Fringe’s Garden of Unearthly Delights and Gluttony venues, in Kadlitpina and Murlawirrapurka parks respectively.

The 2024 parkland grounds play host to a combined 246 Fringe shows between February 16 and March 17 – that’s a lot of people to cater for – and chances are those people are going to be hungry.

Luckily for everyone involved, Adelaide’s East End is scattered with decent eateries – some better than others when it comes to feeding plant-eaters. So vegans never fear – there are six vegan-friendly restaurants that rise to the occasion and worthy of chucking on your to-eat list before heading into The Garden or Gluttony this Adelaide Fringe season – take a look.

1. Golden Boy

Here we have a crowd-favourite amongst the vegan community of Adelaide, and for good reason. Golden Boy has come a long, long way in respect of their plant-based offerings, and the modern Thai restaurant are doing the most by serving up a vegan degustation menu for the ages. Think: larb with toasted sticky rice and lettuce cups, as well as char-grilled pumpkin with peanut satay, norinade, and seaweed crisps – paired with a South Australian-focused drinks menu.

Where: 309 North Terrace, Adelaide

2. Africola

Much like Golden Boy, a vegan degustation menu isn’t out of the question if you’re looking to simply chow down. Neighbouring Africola is an eccentric eating house boasting African-inspired fare with a flare. In tandem with seasonal produce at the forefront and an eternal section of the menu dedicated to vegetables, you can expect: dahl aside coconut and coriander chutney, plus mushroom, white bean, and chilli crisp – whilst you dine amongst flamboyant artworks and give ear to tasteful tunes.

Where: 4 East Terrace, Adelaide

3. Midnight Spaghetti

A lil’ more on the casual side of things in comparison to Golden Boy and Africola, but nevertheless Midnight Spaghetti has your back and your belly covered for all things vegan in Adelaide’s East End. Midnight S’ghetti combines old-school and a hint of rock ‘n’ roll to their overall aesthetic, and again twists traditional with inventive in terms of their Italian fare. How about: spaghetti with cavolo nero, and preserved lemon, or risotto with mushroom, almond, and crispy enoki – alongside two other pasta options. Giving the people what they want.

Where: 196 Grenfell St, Adelaide

4. Ong Vietnamese

Located on Rundle Street, right in the thick of it, Ong Vietnamese is the ideal spot for a touch of people-watching accompanied by vibrant eats. Speaking of, try the: yellow mushroom curry, the sticky eggplant, or perhaps the fried broccoli with pickled onion, whipped miso tofu and chilli jam – all of which happen to be gluten-free. Dine al fresco amongst the chaos or keep it tame inside Ong’s low-lit space.

Where: 287 Rundle St, Adelaide

5. Daughter In Law

If you’re feeling hot, Daughter In Law is right there beside you with their ‘unauthentic Australian Indian’ cuisine. Hailing from Adelaide’s ‘cooler’ sibling, Melbourne, Daughter In Law brings the big smoke energy to lil’ ol’ Adelaide with all-out decor, lighting, and edible flowers too.

Spice it up with: tandoori king oyster mushroom atop spiced hummus and roasted chickpeas, chana masala chickpeas with green mango powder, and Delhi-spiced eggplant and potatoes – to name a few vegan dishes in the mix. Wash it all down with Daughter In Law’s super fruity cocktails.

Where: 290 Rundle St, Adelaide

6. Staazi & Co.

Not a restaurant per se, but it’s just too good not to mention Greek eatery, Staazi & Co. The 100 per cent vegan joint is small in size but big on flavour, grilling up unreal l*mb and chick*n yiros, super saucy AB’s, and f*ta-loaded chips, amongst Staazi’s Grecian street food. Although the alcove eatery has its limits when it comes to seating, the sky’s the limit in terms of how far and wide word has spread regarding Staazi’s outrageously good vegan yiros.

Where: 224 Grenfell St, Adelaide
