Wanting to head out for a tasty dinner but feel like keeping it simple stupid? Mood. Sometimes a cool and casual dining experience is all you need when venturing out into society. From cosy Italian joints to vibrant Korean nosheries, there are plenty of casual dinner spots in and around Adelaide with vegans on their mind. Here are 10 of the best spots as voted by your fellow, plant-eating South Aussies.

1. Pondok Daun, Adelaide

Pondok Daun can sometimes slip under the radar – its Currie Street location is unsuspecting and can easily be drowned out when dodging the city crowds. But if you’ve ever ventured inside for a meal, you’ll know that Pondok Daun serves up Indonesian food worth fighting (over the last bite) for. Pondok’s vegan menu spans three pages, with authenticity at the forefront. The gado-gado (cooked salad with peanut sauce) and bihun goreng (fried noodles) are most definitely worth a taste.

Where: 94 Currie St, Adelaide

2. NNQ, Woodville

For those around the north-western suburbs of Adelaide, NNQ has long been a Woodville institution for a bona fide Vietnamese feast. The eatery itself manages to be contemporary and lowkey all at the same time, and you can expect the same when it comes to your meal – but packed with all the punches. Get around the đậu hũ rang muối (salt and pepper tofu), or our personal favourite đậu hũ sốt cà (fried silken tofu with tomato sugo), or the chả giò Hà Nội (Hanoi spring rolls).

Where: 65 Woodville Rd, Woodville

3. African Village Centre Restaurant, Torrensville

Alcohol-free environments are seemingly hard to come by when it approaches dinner time, but African Village Centre Restaurant in Torrensville is a haven without a drop in sight. The large eatery cooks up traditional Ethiopian cuisine with a pretty decent selection of vegan fare up for grabs. Get your hands dirty as you scoop curries and tear injera (fermented pancake/flatbread) over an earthy, Ethiopian coffee.

Where: 2A Northcote St, Torrensville

4. Pirate Life Brewing, Port Adelaide

A day in Port Adelaide isn’t complete without a visit to a local brewery – whether you’re there purely for the social ambiance, to catch some live jamming, or to sample the brew and grub. Pirate Life Brewing within the seaside town has got the lot, and when it comes to plant-based bites, you can’t go past the chick*n’ katsu sandwich, allegedly. You can even get a haircut or a shave while you’re at it.

Where: 18 Baker St, Port Adelaide

5. K-pub, Adelaide

An obvious choice for some, but a great choice nonetheless. K-pub is a hotspot for a reason, and we’re narrowing it down due to their juicy, Korean fried chick*n which is said to be the best in Adelaide. The neon-lit eatery pumps out the K-pop and certainly doesn’t hold back on flavourtown either. Sink your teeth into the stir-fried be*f bulgogi, slurp the mandoo jeongol (dumpling hotpot), or monch some kimchi fried rice. You’re in for a good time no matter.

Where: 167 Gouger St, Adelaide

6. Francesco’s Osteria, Torrensville

Step into the welcoming Italian hideout that is Francesco’s Osteria. The Torrensville restauro specialises in Venetian soul food and dang can you taste the soul in every bite. Francesco’s is big on local produce and brings organic ingredients to the forefront when viable. Whether you’re desiring pasta, polenta, or antipasto Francesco’s has got you covered. And if the pesto pappardelle isn’t high on your ‘to-eat list’, it should be.

Where: 146b Henley Beach Rd, Torrensville

7. Mai Kitchen Restaurant, Ferryden Park

Another predictable, yet deserving eatery in our ’10 of the best’ is Mai Kitchen with their Vietnamese eats. The unpretentious canteen sits off of the beaten track in Ferryden Park, and boasts an extensive vegan menu that will have you putting your decision-making skills to the test. Stocked with all the mock meats, Mai Kitchen whips up succulent dishes of generous proportions, such as: roast p*rk claypot, be*ef pho, dumplings in laksa soup, and even a number of veeg desserts to wash it all down.

Where: 1-5/34 Wright St, Ferryden Park

8. Eros Kafe, Adelaide

A couple years back, you’d be dreamin’ if you asked for a ‘vegan menu’ at a Greek restaurant – but fear not, Eros Kafe has just the thing. The laid-back restaurant provides both traditional and modern Greek cuisine. Think: yigandes plaki (oven-baked lima beans in rich tomato salsa), feta kafteri (oven-baked vegan feta), and vegan halloumi salad. Pull up a seat on Rundle Street and dream of those summer days in Greece.

Where: 275 Rundle St, Adelaide

9. Ajisen Ramen, Adelaide

No lie, the vegan ramen scene in Adelaide doesn’t go off – but when you’re in the mood for a steamy bowl of the Japanese noodle soup that we’ve all come to know and love, there’s no stopping the cravings. Luckily, Ajisen Ramen offers just the thing to quench your hunger, complete with chunks of silken tofu that are fried to perfection. Just make sure to specify that you’d like your ramen made with vegetable broth and to hold the egg, and you’re good to go.

Where: 2/23 Leigh St, Adelaide

10. Two-Bit Villains, Adelaide

With a retro fit-out to boot, Two-Bit Villains is a crowd-pleaser that’s been serving the OG vegans of Adelaide since 2011. Get your fix of American classics made vegan like Sloppy Joes, loaded hotdogs, the thickest of shakes, stacked sundaes, and house-made sodas. Nab a seat on Two-Bit’s balcony overlooking Rundle Mall and watch the world go by.
