Inspired by Taiwanese flavours, Moon Bear Dumpling Co serve up tasty morsels for lunch and dinner at their Fulham locale. With a whopping 14 different vegan options on their menu, including two choices of vegan dumplings, it’s a plant-eater’s field day. Get into the black mushroom dumplings or the ‘Megan the Vegan’ variety, smothered in a sticky soy vinegar.

2. Dumpling King, Adelaide

Smack bang in the middle of the Chinatown action is the crowd go-to, Dumpling King. These sizable dumplings are juicy and jammed with vegetables like zucchini, onion, and chewy bits of tofu. The wrapper is not to thick and not too thin, they’re just right in our hearts.

3. Star Dumplings, Adelaide

Said to be the best in the biz when it comes to vegan dumplings in Adelaide, aptly named Star Dumplings know a thing or two about the lil’ nippers. Having kept the recipe exactly the same for years on end, you can expect consistency each and every time. The vegetable filling is a textural delight with the likes of carrot, wood ear mushroom, and tofu amongst the guts.

4. Mandoo, Adelaide

Don’t even think about horking these down in one bite – they’re big boys. The wee Bank Street eatery plate up Korean-style dumplings a.k.a. mandoo, which are typically larger and rounder to their Chinese counterpart. The dough is much thinner too, and the focus is all about that vegetable filling consisting of the usual offenders, plus tofu and sweet potato starch noodles too. Mandoo’s mandoo sit aside a leafy green salad, a pot of pickles, and a tub of chilli paste for all your condiment needs.

5. K-Pub, Adelaide

As seen in our guides to the best fried chick*n and the best casual dinner spots in Adelaide, K-Pub bring the very best vegan Korean cuisine to the city, if not the state. Boasting a dedicated vegan menu, K-Pub don’t skimp on the mandoo, offering up a deep-fried version on the more so bite-size side of things. K-Pub’s mandoo are sweet potato starch noodle and spring onion aplenty.

6. Parwana Afghan Kitchen, Torrensville

Dumplings, yes, but perhaps not as you know it. Famed Parwana Afghan Kitchen on Henley Beach Road pack a punch in all aspects of their menu, and their spiced dumplings are no exception. Two options are up for grabs including: the steamed mantu stuffed with carrot and sautéed onion, topped with a lentil mince sauce and garnished with paprika and mint; and the fried ashak filled with chives and smothered in the same lush lentil sauce and garnishes.

7. Hilton Korean Takeaway, Hilton

With just three tables available for dine-in, Hilton Korean Takeaway really meant it when they said ‘takeaway’. And although you won’t find mandoo on Hilton Korean’s menu, you will find gyoza-style dumplings packed with p*rk mince. They’re juicy, they’re not messy, and they’re pretty high up on our taste bud list.

8. Zenhouse, West Hindmarsh

Zenhouse is no stranger to the vegan scene of Adelaide – giving the people what they want since 2006 – that being 100 per cent vegan yum cha, sizzling platters, roast du*ks, and all of the plant-based me*ts you can dream of. As far as dumplings go, Zenhouse offer two types of the scrumptious pockets: the stock standard of mushroom, tofu and vermicelli; and crystal dumplings of spinach and soy tvp (textured vegetable protein).

9. Dumpling Planet, Adelaide

Ever had a hankering for midnight dumplings? Well you’ll be pleased to know that you can satisfy those cravings at Dumpling Planet on Hindley Street between the hours of 11am and 2am most days. These particular dumplings are nothing flash, but boy do they hit the spot. The moist vegetable filling accompanies the gnawable dumpling skin just nicely.

10. The Salopian Inn, McLaren Vale

Seasonality is at the forefront of the Salopian Inn’s ethos and menu, and although they’re located a hot minute out of Adelaide, the Inn’s dumplings are well worth a mention. While the menu is ever-changing, during our last visit the Salopian’s dumplings encased mushroom and pickled ginger, bathed in a tom yum-esque dressing, and topped with crispy onion and coriander – a flavour combination for the ages.

11. Koyo, Prospect

Treat yourself – Koyo is quite the flashy restaurant specialising in Japanese fare in Prospect. Much like the Salopian Inn, presentation along with unique flavour combinations are front and centre, with Koyo’s dumplings containing salted daikon, mushroom and tofu, sitting in a shiitake dashi and crisp garlic oil.
