It’s that time of the year again – the bunnies are at it and chocolate eggs are comin’ out the wazoo – it’s Easter baby – well, almost. Sunday 31 March is the 2024 date for Easter indulgence, and for some, that means cruelty-free sweets and snacks – hot cross buns no exception. We’ve put together a guide to five of the best bakeries where you can get your hot little hands on some hot cross buns in Adelaidegluten-free ones too!

1. Ingle Farm Bakery, Ingle Farm

Don’t sleep on it, get to Ingle Farm Bakery. With a vast range of unusual vegan baked goods, Inlge Farm Bakery have risen to their award-winning status, specialising in Vietnamese pastries and rolls. Their hot cross buns are always a winner, and rest assured knowing you’re in for a treat with their old-fashioned buns.

2. Alby’s Gluten Free Bakery, Flinders Park

As seen in our guide to the best vegan-friendly bakeries in Adelaide, Alby’s Gluten Free Bakery is doing Gods’ work. There’s no skimping on flavour or texture with Alby’s gluten-free and vegan hot cross buns. They’re equally as bouncy, luscious, and as much of a spread-friedly vessel than their glutenous counterparts.

3. Brighton Jetty Bakery, Brighton

A crowd-favourite amongst the vegan community of Adelaide is the seaside bakeshop that is Brighton Jetty Bakery. Here, you’ll find traditional hot cross buns – nothin’ crazy, nothin’ affronting, just your stock standard hot cross buns, done the best way possible.

4. Nutrition Republic, Goodwood & Bowden

It’s not all Sweetie McGee up in here – Nutrition Republic has your back if you’re after an Easter treat on the healthier side of things. After great success in 2023, Nutrition Republic have brought back their gluten-free, refined sugar-free, and of course vegan hot cross buns. And although they may not look like your run-of-the-mill bun, they’re a surefire underdog.

5. Woolworths, Various Locations

Bit of an honourable mention, but the convenience of Woolworths is sometimes inescapable. Word on the street has it that Woolies’ new range of Biscoff-filled hot cross buns are swoon-worthy. They’re stuffed with oozing Biscoff, they’re soft and fluffy, and they’re just undeniably good.

But if that’s not your jam, Adelaide-based bakehouse, Kytons Bakery are stocked in all Woolworths stores around the city – and as of March 2023, Kytons made the decision to update their age-old hot cross bun recipe, and blessed be, they’re now 100 per cent vegan.
